Reusable packaging bags and an operation system
Comvey. Inc. CEO
Reusable packaging bags for consumers and e-commerce businesses, and an operation system to operate them.
"Story:
In recent years, the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions such as CO2 has become an important global issue, and Japan has set a goal to achieve zero GHG emissions by 2050, which requires various efforts to realize a sustainable society. On the other hand, the growing use of e-commerce among consumers is becoming more prominent, generating 1.5 million tons of packaging waste annually (according to our estimate).
Therefore, comvey has planned and developed this service to solve the above problem by replacing the packaging materials that were previously disposed of with reusable bags. The planner, Mr. Kajita, who has been involved in the logistics business at ITOCHU Corporation for more than six years, is taking on the challenge of ""creating a new logistics system that fits the EC society"" with designers and engineers who share his vision of ""creating beautiful logistics,"" while involving other companies involved in the project.
Detail:
In an EC cart with comvey's system, consumers can choose whether they want to use cardboard boxes or share bags as their packaging method. Once the bag is returned to comvey, it is cleaned and repaired before being offered back to the e-commerce business. (For more information, visit https://comvey.jp )
Consumers who choose to share bags can not only reduce packing stress (*1) and earn coupons and other benefits, but can also easily contribute to the SDGs. On the other hand, e-commerce businesses can minimize packaging waste generated by delivery, reduce CO2 emissions from cardboard collection and waste incineration, and promote decarbonization by introducing this service.
1 : Packaging stress: Stress consumers feel about packaging after EC purchases, such as excessive packaging, bulky packaging, troublesome disassembly and garbage disposal, and environmental guilt.
ShareBags are made in Japan with trusted partners from recyclable fabrics, carefully sewn one by one in factories also in Japan, with the goal of being reused more than 50 times, but when they reach the end of their useful life cycle or are damaged, they can be recycled and turned into pellets, which are then used as raw materials. The goal is to reuse the fabric at least 50 times, but if it reaches the end of its useful life or is damaged, it is recycled and turned into pellets for reuse as raw materials.
Since its launch in May 2023, the service has been introduced to three apparel brands, with 20-30% of buyers choosing to purchase a shared bag."

The convenience of online shopping and fast consumer culture has made logistics packaging a highly controversial issue. Similar initiatives around the world are attempting to address this concern to some extent. In a society (or market) like Japan, where logistics infrastructure is well-developed, user habits are good, and sustainability awareness is gradually increasing, it is intriguing to see what observations about consumer behavior this project can bring about.
