Redefining architecture with microorganism-grown building materials for circular design
Architect David Benjamin presented the experimental building “Hy-Fi” in 2014, using “growing bricks” made from agricultural waste and mycelium. These bricks absorb carbon and are compostable, showcasing the potential of sustainable building materials. He views architecture as a “dynamic system” that should coexist with the environment. Promoting collaboration across disciplines and open knowledge sharing, Benjamin evaluates the value of biomaterials from a carbon sequestration perspective. He questions the boundary between coexistence with and exploitation of nature, exploring how architecture can contribute to a better future.
