Machi no Closet (Machi Closet)

Description

Machi no Closet (Machi Closet) is a concept store for an upcycling community that creates a “cycle of clothing.

It aims to reduce apparel loss, which is said to be about 480,000 tons per year and has become a social issue, by collaborating with local communities in the areas of Color (re-dyeing of clothes), Trade (exchange of clothes), and Pass (collection of clothes).

Story

Do you know how much clothing is thrown away in Japan?

The answer is about 480,000 tons per year.

This is equivalent to billions of pieces of clothing.
On average, about 130 large truckloads of clothes per day are disposed of by incineration or landfill.

Furthermore, there are 25 pieces of clothing per person that are not worn even once in a year.

At the very least, it would be nice if the clothes that are currently in our closets could be saved from being thrown away.
We wish that at least some of the clothes that are currently lying in our closets would not be thrown away.

With this in mind, we have started

We take care of the clothes that are no longer worn and give them a new look through upcycling and other means.
We keep the clothes we no longer wear, and have them come back in a new form through upcycling and other means.

In this way, we can have fun together with everyone in the town.
We hope to create a future where clothes are not thrown away, but instead are recycled.

A new community through clothes.

It is obvious that in our consumption obsessed culture, clothing is one of the aspects that is overused the most. Clothes are bought and thrown away without a second thought or are barely worn and lie in your closet for years. Billions of pieces of clothing are being incinerated after a lot of resources were used to produce them and transport them. Machi Closet tackles this issue by centering the community in a sector that heavily relies on individualism. Almost like a clothing rental service, that also increases the quality of your unused products through upcycling. Even if the clothes are used, you can still have new outfits on a constant rotation: because at the end of the day, you don’t wear everything you own all the time. So, this sustainable solution also gives you the opportunity to be inspired every time you look in your closet.
